» DOOR & HARDWARE Federation ( DHF ) has announced the launch of its new garage door safety video for members , installers , and consumers , to better understand the complexities of the ‘ hold-to-run ’ feature .
The six-minute video , which provides a number of safety demonstrations , clearly explains the issues surrounding the understanding of hold-to-run , as far as safety is concerned , and that the opening and closing of the door are not the sole considerations . For example , if the door is above a certain weight , or if the door opens onto a public highway , additional safety features are required . With DHF ’ s Garage Door Group being

consumer-facing , the organisation believes it is vital to raise awareness of the overall safety features of the domestic garage door .
“ Our video focuses on the hold-to-run feature associated with roller garage doors and very clearly highlights the importance of considering safety ( as well as aesthetics and cost ) when choosing a new

garage door ,” says DHF ’ s Head of Commercial Operations , Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens . “ It ’ s important to note that an automated garage door is , in fact , a machine and should be treated as such if injuries to people and pets are to be avoided .”
DHF has , for many years , advised the industry on the interpretation of standards associated with garage door safety , and the legislation surrounding

this . It is the first time the federation has produced such a video , but in so doing , the organisation is able to reach a much wider market and educate the consumer as to what they should looking for as standard when selecting a new garage door , and about the safety feature known as hold-to-run .
“ We have been particularly concerned that some providers who are not DHF members , have been selling illegal products and offering safety as an additional feature instead of as standard ,” adds Patricia . “ A DHF member will always put safety first and DHF remains committed to placing only safe , compliant products on the market that are fit for purpose .”
