HERITAGE

A new generation for heritage windows

Can uPVC ever really match the aesthetics and overall appeal of timber in heritage installs ? Jeff Dunn , Group Sales & Marketing Director at the Glazerite UK Group believes so . Here , he highlights how recent manufacturing developments have taken heritage uPVC installs to the next level .
» NESTLED IN THE Northamptonshire village of Cottingham , which can trace its history back to Roman times , this Victorian stone cottage was in desperate need of new windows . The existing wooden frames were rotten , and the window sashes were painted shut . Draughty in the winter and leaving the house stifling in the summer , the homeowner was desperate to upgrade them for windows that were aesthetically pleasing , functional , secure , and durable , while restoring the property back to its former elegance .
For Glazerite UK Group installer , A-Team Glazing , there was only one solution that could meet the requirements of the homeowner , and still blend in flawlessly with the neighbouring houses – the Halo Flush Sash , artfully crafted from uPVC to replicate its wooden counterparts .
Heritage-style windows made from modern materials might sound like a contradiction in terms , but uPVC has come a long way since its ‘ white gold ’ heyday in the 1980s . Evolution in style and colour is matched by developments in security features , durability , and thermal efficiencies , not to mention the low maintenance nature uPVC has over timber .
There has been a sharp increase in demand for heritage styles in recent years as homeowners
look to add or restore character . To meet that demand , Glazerite has continued to pour investment into its manufacturing capabilities so that it is wellplaced to support its installers now and in the future . Coupled with products from forwardthinking suppliers like VEKA and the Residence Collection , Glazerite is able to offer a range of flush sash options for every price point , as well as the ever-versatile VEKA vertical slider .
When conservation is on the agenda , Residence 9 is the perfect choice as it has been designed to meets the stringent requirements necessary for conservation areas ; while the Residence 7 and Halo Flush Sash both also offer impressive aesthetics with superior thermal benefits . Each flush sash solution is also crafted from high performance materials and finished with traditional detailing for an elegant appearance .
As demonstrated by recent developments in the fabrication of its products , Glazerite strives to continually broaden and improve its offering to better support its customers . The introduction of Timberweld ® to its production facilities in Wellingborough and Peterborough has enabled Glazerite to apply an innovative manufacturing approach to R9
and R7 , and , more recently , Halo . Timberweld , the patented method of welding corners on uPVC to make an authentic timber butt joint effect , offers consistency in manufacturing and finish for installers looking to recreate the traditional look on their installations .
Indeed , the recent addition of Timberweld to R9 in particular has opened doors for a number of Glazerite ’ s installers . As windows can be ordered unglazed , the additional weight of bonded glass is removed , which makes for easier frame transportation and handling .
Just as we continue to adapt our range to meet the changing demands of the end customer , so do our suppliers . This has been demonstrated by the VEKA Group who this year began broadening the use of recycled
materials in their products , including the Halo Flush Sash . As more and more consumers become aware of the environment and how they can play a part in living more sustainably , VEKA ’ s recycling focus will become an increasingly important part of our installers ’ own offerings .
Back in Cottingham , the homeowner is delighted with A-Team Glazing ’ s installation of four Halo Flush Sash windows in Pebble Grey . The transformation is remarkable , with the uPVC windows blending flawlessly with the surrounding stones for a clean , low-maintenance finish and a warmer , more secure home . It ’ s just another example of how the use of modern , high-performance materials like uPVC are more than a match for wood .
