INDUSTRYNEWS FROMTHEEDITOR

ONE STEP INTO SUMMER , BUT THREE STEPS BACK ?

» SUMMER CAN SOMETIMES BE QUIET FOR industry ( do some factories still take a summer break ?), but if the past year and a half has taught us anything it ’ s to expect the unexpected . And , while it is predicted that the current housing market ‘ boom ’ is slowly starting to quiet down , anyone who ’ s addicted to Rightmove ( like me ) will know that properties are moving right , left and centre at the moment . A quick glance at the listings will also show that conservatories , garden rooms and extensions are becoming more and more commonplace ( no surprise there , as the trade magazines are reporting exactly the same thing ) plus a long stint of working from home means that people have started to re-evaluate their living spaces and the space they need to live , work and play .
So , the good news is , people are moving , adding rooms on their houses , updating their doors and windows , and renovating for that ‘ Insta ’ ( nee Grand Designs ) aesthetic . The not-so-good-news for the sector is that the industry is continuing to experience short-comings namely skills and raw materials . The skills shortage is not a new thing but if fenestration was an ‘ ageing industry ’ ten years ago , where are we now ? Raw materials which have been affected by Brexit and trade deals have the knock-on effect for lead times , pricing , installation ( again hardly new news ).
The already complex supply chain of fenestration has taken on several extra links over the years , and sometimes it seems the more innovative concepts that are invented to make things easier for us - automated machinery , apps for business , etc - the more things beyond our control ( or seem that way for the most part ) get in the way and make things more complicated ; from struggling to import components to not even being allowed into somebody ’ s house !
Clearview Group has welcomed several comment pieces recently , in addition to the usual features and articles we publish , where individuals from brands and businesses have not only found ways to navigate through these strange times but also ( and we ’ re very thankful for this ) not only found the time to get in touch with us as a magazine to share their insight and experience , but also laid down firm plans and methods of how to assist their own stakeholders and customers ’ customers as well .
I hope you find these contributions interesting and helpful , and of course , if you have your own comments or suggestions on the subject , you know what to do .
See you next time , Gemma , Editor

Clearview ’ s ‘ little sister ’ meets major milestone

» CLEARVIEW GROUP IS celebrating this month as Pro Installer commemorates its 100th edition with its July issue . Published monthly – 12 magazines a year – Pro Installer sends a total of 30,000 copies each month to more than 650 distribution point including many independent and established brands .
Clearview and Pro Installer director Steve Sidebottom commented : “ Pro Installer is the sister publication to Clearview magazine , but some customers still don ’ t fully understand the difference . Whilst Clearview is posted monthly to approximately 14000 industry contacts to land directly on their desks , PRO Installer is targeting the massive ‘ white van economy ’.
“ We know this valuable sector is difficult to access , but by distributing nationwide we have been able to connect our advertisers with the readers who visit trade counters as part of their daily and weekly schedule . This combined with massive trade counter growth has enabled us to expand our distribution and reach .”
Pro Installer , which is printed in newspaper format , includes everything an installer working the fenestration sector needs from day-to-day business advice such as tax and marketing tips to practical how-to fitting guides , product specification , tools and uniform plus support on mental health and wellbeing , and even van driving and maintenance help .
Unlike many trade magazines , Pro Installer just like Clearview , publishes a magazine every single month ( even July and August ) and didn ’ t miss any editions through the Covid-19 pandemic , as installers continued to trade

HOW WILL ORIGIN SUPPORT ITS PARTNERS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE HELP TO BUILD SCHEME ?
Ben Brocklesby , Director at Origin , discusses what the Help to Build scheme is and how Origin will support its network of Partners to maximise the opportunities it presents .
Exciting change is on the horizon for housebuilding in the UK which presents a business opportunity for those of us working in the fenestration industry . The recently announced , Government funded , Help to Build scheme will see £ 150m of funding made available to make self-building more accessible and affordable . The Government believes the scheme could contribute 30,000-40,000 new homes in the UK per year - now that ’ s a lot of doors and windows .
Currently in the UK , the majority of housebuilding is done by big construction companies . However , they are not currently meeting the country ’ s housing requirements and demand is now outstripping supply . In fact , it is estimated that there is a 250,000-home deficit . This is where the Help to Build scheme comes in . The idea is to empower individuals to build their own properties , how they want , where they want . This is revolutionary . Following changes to self-build mortgages in the 1990s , self-building a property was only a realistic option for the very wealthy , but the Help to Build scheme changes this .
If the Government is correct and the initiative encourages a huge uptake in self-building , there will be increased demand for the industries involved in housebuilding , including the fenestration industry , which is only a positive thing . However , the industry can only keep up with this increased demand if manufacturers and installers are there to fulfil it , and the suppliers are supporting in the delivery of it .
