Farmers have to plant seeds and cultivate the land they work on . Eventually it produces a good harvest . Farming for business is similar . This method takes time , but it will produce results . For those in sales , there are several techniques to grow the business that are each called farming . This describes how I used the technique to grow my business . This is especially helpful when you have more time than cash .
Get or make a map of all the homes in an area where you want to grow your business . This may be a subdivision , or section of town that matches your target market ’ s demographics . Don ’ t make it too large . Somewhere between 200 and 1,000 homes works well . When you have farmed one area , you can move on to another location . But spend some time developing and cultivating the first area before you move on . Plan on at least several weeks and probably several months .
Since you are picking the homes where you want to grow your business , select ones that will be a good fit . If your market is upper income families , then make sure that is the type of neighborhood you are working in . A neighborhood with many two income families , families with children , and families with pets can all be good clients . Think about the type of folks you will be calling on and be prepared with something that will appeal to them .
You can use whatever time is left at the end of each working day to call on a few of the homes in this neighborhood . Put on a clean uniform shirt . Make sure the van is washed . You want to talk with people , not simply knock on doors . Between 3 PM and 6 PM is a good time to find mothers present since the children are likely home from school . Once again , think of the folks you want to reach . Decide what is a good time to reach them at home without disturbing their dinner , etc .
