I think what Amazon has done for us as a society is to train us all to have higher expectations . When we purchase things , we assume we will get them very quickly . And we believe we will be able to know where they are on their way to us . That ’ s especially true for the customer who ’ s purchasing something with a higher dollar value . They have just spent a lot of money and they are very excited about getting their merchandise . They want it now . They don ’ t want to wait for two three weeks .”
Another change that Ludlow ’ s seen is how the web has allowed regional companies to expand their reach . “ There are a lot of very good companies that are prevalent in a region of the United States that do a very , very good job . They ’ re very well-known locally . They can take what they ’ re doing nationally because they can market online , and they have a company like FragilePAK help them move it to every zip code in the continental US .”
He points to a recent inquiry FragilePAK got from a highend , local specialty furniture company that wanted to serve their affluent customers with homes outside their area . “ Their clients are wealthy enough to have second homes . They wanted us to help deliver their furniture to those home in areas like Houston or Miami ,” he says . “ Yes , they could ship their furniture with an LTL company but is it going to get there in one piece ? And when it gets there how it going to get set-up in the house ? That ’ s why we turn to the members of the CLDA - for that last , critical mile . We look to those with the ability to handle certain capacities in specific cities . We look for last-mile providers with the ability to scale up . Of course , the technology piece is a critical part of it . That ’ s all about visibility because of what we offer when it comes to that is really cutting edge .
