On October 2 , 2023 , Congressman Matt Gaetz ( R-FL ) filed what is known as a privileged resolution to declare the Office of the Speaker of the House vacant , thus removing Congressman Kevin McCarthy ( R-CA ) from his role as Speaker of the House . The resolution is considered privileged in that the House of Representatives must consider it immediately .

On Tuesday , October 3 , the House considered the resolution to vacate the Office of the Speaker of the House . Allies of Speaker McCarthy attempted to derail this motion by moving to table the resolution . Still , that motion to table was defeated by a vote of 218 to 208 – thus allowing the House to vote on the resolution to vacate the Office of the Speaker . That motion was passed by the House on a vote of 216 to 210 , with eight Republicans joining 208 Democratic Members in voting to vacate the Speakership . No Democratic Member voted against the resolution to remove the Office of the Speaker .
Many Republican Members who voted to remove Speaker McCarthy from office held personal grudges against him from his many years of serving in Republican Leadership in the House . During the debate , Congressman Gaetz cited that McCarthy called up a continuing resolution ( CR ) in the House of Representatives on September 30 , a bill that would keep the federal government open until
