The Election
Election night proved to be quite a night for Republicans across the country . Former President Trump easily won and will serve as the 47th president , beating Vice President Kamala Harris . President-elect Trump joins former President Grover Cleveland as the only two individuals elected to the presidency in non-consecutive terms .

Trump won 312 electoral college votes compared to 226 electoral college votes for Harris . Trump also won the popular vote , besting Harris by nearly 2.5 million votes . The President-elect improved his performance in the 2020 presidential race by gaining around two million more votes , whereas Harris underperformed Joe Biden ’ s vote total by about seven million . Trump won every one of the seven “ swing ” states : Arizona , Nevada , Wisconsin , Michigan , Pennsylvania , North Carolina , and Georgia .
Leadership in Congress
Republicans won control of the Senate , picking up four Senate seats to give them a 53 to 47-seat majority . In addition to flipping West Virginia and Montana , which were expected Republican pick-ups before the election , the GOP also flipped Ohio and
