Pahlavi fled the country and an
Islamic republic of Iran came into
existence which again nationalised
the oil sector.
It is the desire to have a
hegemonic sway over the natural
resource, that is oil, of the Middle
East that US imperialism withdrew
from the Iranian nuclear accord.
The Iranian accord, called as Joint
Comprehensive Plan of Action
(JCPoA) was jointly signed by the
five permanent members of security
council (US, France,UK, Russia
and China) and Germany and
European Union in 2015. The
withdrawal of US from the JCPoA
has no doubt angered other
signatories. China responded
stating that having deal is better
than no deal; dialogue is better
than confrontation. Russia said it
will try to keep the deal functioning
despite Us withdrawal. German
chancellor Angela Merkel, British
Prime Minister Theresa May and
French President Immanuel Macron
in a joint statement regretted the
Trump’s announcement and the
European media vehemently
condemned it. They said the Iran
should comply with IAEA’s
inspection while they remain
committed to JCPoA. They also
pledged to address the “major
concerns” raised by Washington by
stating “shared concerns about
Iran’s ballistic missiles programme
and its destabilising regional
activities, especially in Syria, Iraq
and Yemen”.
Behind the diplomatic jargon,
the real demand is that Iran should
slavishly comply with the foreign
policy of US and EU. And they
wanted to extend dismantling of
nuclear programme to missiles,
depriving Iran one of the defence
systems. This is the convergence
of interests among the western
imperialist powers.
The European imperialist
powers are seeking to promote
their interests which are no less
than those of US imperialism. They
12
wanted to economically exploit Iran.
They join hands with US to unleash
military (last month’s missile attacks
on Syria) and political interventions
like JCPoA in the Middle East. Here
lies the conflict of interests among
the US imperialism and European
imperialists.
In the article titled “Contracts
worth billions up in smoke with US
sanctions against Iran”, Le Monde
drew up a list of the contracts major
EU corporations stand to lose in
Iran. These include a 10 billion Euro
contract for Airbus for passenger
jets to Iran; French oil major Total’s
5 billion Euro contract to exploit the
South Pars gas field; Volkswagen’s
plans to begin selling cars in Iran,
as well as operations of auto maker
PSA Peugeot-Citroën which holds
39 per cent of Iran car market and
Renault-Nissan, which now sells
1,70,000 cars a year in Iran. The
European imperialists are not
ready to forego this market of Iran.
This is the basis for the contention
and collusion among the imperialist
powers which is always goes
against the interests of countries
of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
For the imperialists making
and breaking of accords is a matter
of expediency that is part of
defending its hegemonic exploiting
interests. In the recent past,
Mohammad Gaddafi of Libya had
signed a deal in 2003 to give up
weapons of mass destruction
programme. But the US shred this
agreement without giving any
evidence to show that Libya violated
the accord and unleashed a war
on Libya to change the regime.
We strongly condemn The US
imperialism’s pressure in the form
of sanctions on Iran to subjugate
Iran and exploit is natural resource
– oil- and to establish its hegemony
over the Middle East and call upon
the people to stand by the side of
Iranian people in their efforts to
protect their national interests and
independence.
Rajinder Sachar
A Staunch Supporter of Democratic Rights
The passing away of Justice Rajinder Sachar on 29 th April 2018 was
deeply mourned by all those who stand up for the democratic rights of the
people.
In his earlier years, Rajinder Sachar was a political activist, a trade unionist
and socialist throughout his life. Later he became a lawyer practicing in the
Supreme Court. He was made a judge of Delhi High Court in 1970. He retired
as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 1985.
Justice Sachar took a strong stand against the violation of democratic
rights without a fear or favour. He stood up against the ‘Emergency’ imposed
by Indira Gandhi in 1975 as well as the Supreme Court’s legitimisation of its
imposition.
Justice Sachar ordered the police to file FIRs on the leaders who
participated in 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom in Delhi. Later these cases were taken
away from his bench. He strongly condemned the communal violence in
1993-94 after demolition of Babri Masjid and massacre of Muslims in Gujarat
in 2002.
After retirement, he was elected as the President of Peoples Union for
Civil Liberties (PUCL) and continued in that position until 1995.
He was well known for the thoroughly researched 2006 Sachar
committee Report on the social, economic and educational status of the Muslim
community in India. As a socialist he opposed US imperialist invasion of Iraq
and other acts of intervention.
The CPI (ML) pays homage to Rajinder Sachar as the staunch
supporter of democratic rights of the people.
