When Johannes Brahms heard the beautiful strains of Richard Mühlfeld’ s clarinet, he claimed the Meiningen musician“ the best wind player I know”. Brahms came out of retirement to write for Mühlfeld, creating one of his most profound, intimate and strangely coloured works the Clarinet Quintet. Here the Quintet’ s fragile emotions meet the singing strength of Alban Berg’ s‘ Lyric Suite’ and the charming, open-air directness of Carl Nielsen’ s bracing Wind Quintet.
