From its monolithic opening theme kick-starting a cycle of inexorable momentum like a giant pendulum , to the breathless dash of its finale , Schubert ’ s Ninth offers one of the most riveting journeys of any symphonic work . No wonder it attracted the title ‘ Great ’. “ Write for the cello everything that your heart tells you ” said the great soloist Mstislav Rostropovich when asking Britten for a new work . Britten responded with his remarkable ‘ Symphony ’ for cello and orchestra , an inspiring musical journey from darkness to light .
