Steve Prefontaine and the University of Oregon aren’t just a crucial part of
Nike’s history, but the running as a whole. Early Nike collectors and running
historians try to collect anything with Prefontaine and Oregon on it. Oregon
is where Nike got its start, and Steve Prefontaine’s feats on the track, and ul-
timately his untimely death, have made these items command quite a bit of
money. When I buy these shoes and t-shirts, it feels like I don’t just own a
shirt with a Nike Swoosh on it, but a piece of Nike’s legacy. These pieces are a
reflection of how much they cared about their
roots
