John Costacos Interview
What was your impression of “ The Boz ?”
Look at every guy who was the bad boy player . They were kids . What do we expect them to be , Victorian gentlemen ? When you have someone so talented by the time they were fifteen or sixteen and they knew it , the confidence they get from that , paired with the fact that there ’ s no consequences for anything , is amazing . Then when they become professionals and get that kind of money and that kind of attention from that kind of women , what do you expect ?
Brian was always great to us . I think Jim Mc- Mahon was really just being himself , and I think Brian ’ s agent had a lot to do with his persona . I think Brian was just a kid from Texas
who wanted to fish . His agent had this idea that Brian would play for five or six years and then retire and become a huge action movie star . He viewed himself as Colonel Tom Parker and Brian was the Elvis of football . If his body hadn ’ t given out and he had a Pro Bowl career , he might have been able to pull it off , but it just wasn ’ t really who Brian was inside . I remember when he had to retire and people were saying he was laughing all the way to the bank . I said , “ Are you kidding ? You don ’ t think he ’ d give all that money back to have a career and not be considered a bust ?” People have expectations of what your abilities are , and sports fans can be brutal .
