Procedure: First Day activity.
1) Participants write their first name on a sticky label and give it back to tutor.
2) Then they think of an adjective to describe them. See list for advanced level examples.
3) Everyone stands/sits in a circle. Tutor models procedure with one
participant: introduce yourself to the person on your right (including their
adjective, with an explanation if necessary). That person introduces
themselves to you, then turns to the person on their right and introduces
themselves and you. This will continue until the last person in the circle
introduces themselves and everyone in the circle, but don’t do this in a big
circle. Divide the class into 2 or 3 groups. Insist on the use of “This is…”
and “That’s …” for introducing others (not “she’s / he’s…)
4) Give everyone in each group a letter (a, b, c, etc) and ask them to find the
person with the same letter from the other group (s). Then they get together
and tell that person who is who from their group, and learns the adjective
that goes with their name. This way, everyone learn who everyone is.
5) Tutor gives out the labels at random and participants have to give the label
to its owner.
