Citizenship Requirements and Process
To be eligible for citizenship , most individuals must :
Be at least 18 years of age Have lawful permanent residence for at least 5 years , or at least 3 years and be married to and living with U . S . citizen spouse , or have qualifying U . S . military service
Have Good Moral Character Have continuous residence and physical presence in the United States
Demonstrate the ability to read , write , speak , and understand the English language and knowledge of U . S . history and government ( civics ) ( with limited exceptions *)
Have Attachment to the United States .
