Local Area
Situated in the heart of the West End, Shaftesbury Avenue runs from
Piccadilly Circus all the way up to New Oxford Street. Several famous
theatres lie along the route as well as restaurants, cafes and shops offering
souvenirs, everyday necessities, health foods and Chinese acupuncture.
Several of the shop fronts are brightly painted, some quite garishly!

Chinatown, with its restaurants and shops selling Chinese spices and food,
is close at hand.
There is a certain amount of re-development all along Shaftesbury Avenue
with buildings being renovated and smartened up, and in some instances
completely rebuilt. London’s high property prices mean that no area or
building has been overlooked! The smaller side streets off Shaftesbury
Avenue shouldn’t be ignored. So much of London really is best seen on foot
and this part of London is no exception. Remember to look up from time to
time as some of the architecture above eye level can be really interesting.
Walking up Shaftesbury Avenue towards New Oxford Street you will come
to Cambridge Circus, made famous in the George Smiley spy novels written
by John le Carre. In the opposite direction, the bright lights of Piccadilly
Circus and the fountain with the statue of Eros on top are a few minutes’
walk away. This is perhaps the beating heart of London, the centre of the
universe, always busy and full of tourists.
