This & That Nationally, for every $1 invested into the local Main Street program, $26 in new investment occurs. The Main Street Iowa program is one of the most successful state Main Street programs in the nation. Since Main Street Iowa’s inception in 1985, partici- pating communities have grown 4,000 new busi- nesses, and gained 12,000 new employees. The Main Street Approach in a Nutshell The Main Street Approach consists of three tightly integrated com- ponents making up a common-sense strategy-driven framework that guides community based downtown revitalization efforts. 1. Identify the Community Vision for Success: The approach be- gins with creating a vision for success on Main Street that is rooted in a solid understanding of the market realities of the dis- trict and supported by broad community engagement. 2. Create Key Strategies: Communities must work together to identify key strategies that will provide a clear sense of priorities and direction for the Main Street revitalization efforts. Work on these strategies align with the four key areas Main Streets use as a guiding framework known collectively as the Main Street Four Points. Economic Vitality is harnessing local economic opportunity and creating a supportive business environment for small business owners and the growing scores of entrepreneurs and innovators. Promotion positions the Main Street district as the center of the community and the hub of economic activity, while creating a posi- tive image that showcases a community’s unique characteristics. Organization ensures that all program resources (partners, fund- ing, volunteers, etc.) are mobilized to effectively implement the key strategies. 3. Impact and Measurement To succeed: Main Street must show visible results that can only come from completing projects – both shorter and longer-term activities that add up to meaning- ful change. Coinciding with implementation is an equally im- portant focus on measuring progress and results.
