Summer Camp
By Sara Solar I love to swim! It’ s one of my all-time favorite summer activities. I actually learned to swim at JCC camp. Growing up here in Charlotte, I vividly remember attending camp at The JCC on Sharon Amity( yes, I’ m dating myself a bit!). I remember being divided into groups, nervously getting my head wet, learning to blow bubbles, and figuring out how to tread water.
We had swimming lessons in the morning and free swim in the afternoon. I still remember how everyone needed a swimming buddy. When the whistle blew, you had to get out of the pool, find your buddy, and hold up your hands.
Camp taught me to swim, and I wouldn’ t be the swimmer I am today without it. There’ s just something magical about camp – it’ s all about sun, fun, and freedom. It truly is one of the best parts of being a kid. Wouldn’ t it be nice to go back to a time when your biggest worry was who your bunkmate would be or what level swim band, you’ d earn?
Camp is a time for kids to just
be kids – something especially important in today’ s world. It’ s the perfect chance to unplug. No screens! Camp encourages real connection – with others and with the world around them. It helps kids grow more independent and a little braver. Trying something new is just more fun at camp!
I hope all the kids doing the Kid’ s Corner activities get to experience the joy of camp this summer. And for the adults reading this – I hope you take a moment to think back on your own summer camp memories. Maybe even share a few with your kids.
