Where Passion Finds Renewal: A Volunteer’ s Reflection on Hadassahh

By Gina Robins
Every so often, I find myself questioning my commitment to Hadassah. Like many volunteers, I reach moments of burnout; times when I feel tired of giving so much of my time and energy to the chapter.
When that happens, I step back and ask myself what it is about Hadassah that keeps me returning, year after year. And the answer comes quickly: the extraordinary women I have come to know through our chapter and region. They are women of intelligence, passion, and purpose, who thrive on working together to address issues that resonate with Jewish women across the globe – combating antisemitism locally and nationally, advocating for women’ s reproductive rights, and supporting the groundbreaking medical research at Hadassah Hospital.
A past chapter president once told me she especially loves leading local health programs because fundraising for Hadassah Hospital helps ensure medical care is available for all people, regardless of race, creed, or religion. Staffed by Israelis, Palestinians, and other Middle Eastern professionals, the hospital stands as a powerful model of cooperation and bridge-building across cultures.
As our education and advocacy efforts continue to evolve, so does our tireless spirit. A current priority is urging Congress to advance legislation requiring a report on the threat posed by violent antisemitism within transnational extremist movements. Mark your calendars and watch your inbox for more information about Hadassah on the Hill: Day of Impact on Tuesday, March 10.
In addition, Hadassah Charlotte Metro warmly invites members and nonmembers alike to join our monthly programs. On the first Tuesday of each month, we gather for a glass of wine and a friendly schmooze.
Hosted for more than two years by Yvette Jacobson and Lori Trapani, this engaging gathering welcomes men and women and draws anywhere from five to twenty participants. Conversations range from upcoming Charlotte Metro programs and fundraisers to current local, national, and international events.
On the second Friday of each month at 11:45 a. m., Amalia Warshenbrot hosts a Short Story Discussion via Zoom. About a dozen women gather to explore short fiction, most recently from Frankly Feminist, a collection representing the best Jewish feminist stories published in Lilith magazine since 1976.
Written by Jewish women from around the world and across the religious spectrum, these stories spark thoughtful conversation. Newcomers are always welcome – even if they haven’ t read the story.
Finally, our popular BookTalk group, hosted by Aileen Greenberg-Kriner and Karen Futtersak, meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p. m. via Zoom. With selections ranging from comical to profound. The group has grown so popular – a waitlist is now required for new participants!
When I think about the work we do, and the remarkable women who do it alongside me, the burnout fades – and my commitment returns. It’ s in their strength, humor, and determination that I find renewed purpose.
With each new program and conversation, I’ m reminded that the significant impact we create together reaches far beyond any single event. And there is always room at the table for one more person ready to join us. Remember, you too can help make a difference.
