Big Growth, Small Steps: Why Camp Judaea’ s Shorter Overnight Experience Is Just Right

By Francine Safdeye
For many families, the idea of sleepaway camp evokes two very real emotions at once.
The first is about possibility. This could be incredible for my child.
The second is about anticipation and worry. Is my child ready for this?
If you’ re the parent of a rising 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grader, these questions can feel especially daunting. Camp sounds exciting, but also far away. Empowering, yet a little overwhelming.
At Camp Judaea( located in Hendersonville, NC), we hear this from families year after year, which is precisely why our Rishonim( 10 – 12 day) program was created: to offer a thoughtful, supportive, and developmentally appropriate introduction to sleepaway camp.
A First Taste of Independence with a Safety Net
For many young campers, a shorter session is their first experience sleeping away from home, making daily choices without a parent nearby, navigating friendships independently, and learning how they can manage new things. That growth matters. But also, how it happens is equally important.

TRAVEL, CURATED.

Our Rishonim program is designed with younger campers in mind. Counselors are trained to expect and support homesickness, big feelings, and a real need for a structured routine shaped by reassurance, and consistency.
This isn’ t a“ sink or swim” environment. It’ s scaffolded independence, where children are encouraged to stretch while knowing trusted adults are right by their side when they need support or a hug.
Why 10 Days Matter More Than You Might Think
10 days is a powerful sweet spot. It’ s long enough for routines to feel familiar, initial nerves to settle, friendships to begin forming, and for camp to start feeling like their place. And it’ s a short enough duration that this experience never feels endless. Parents and campers both know there’ s a clear, manageable timeline, and first-time campers often leave feeling proud instead of overwhelmed. Many families tell us their child returns home saying,“ I didn’ t think I could do it but I did.”
That sense of accomplishment and pride doesn’ t fade when camp ends. It carries into school, friendships, and everyday life.
The Skills They Carry Home The growth that happens during a short camp session often surprises parents. After Rishonim, families frequently notice their child trying new things with greater confidence, managing small frustrations more independently, and feeling proud of what they have accomplished on their own. These aren’ t just“ camp skills.” They’ re qualities that extend far beyond the summer, developed in a supportive, real-world environment A Jewish Community Rooted in Joy and Belonging
For Jewish families, sleepaway camp is often one of the first places where Jewish life is not simply taught but fully lived, joyfully and in community. Our Rishonim program introduces children to Jewish values, which are woven into daily routines, including Israeli culture, music, and traditions that emphasize belonging, kindness, and responsibility. A shorter session allows young campers to build positive associations with their Jewish community and, through Camp Judaea specifically, to become familiar with Israel, which sits at the heart of camp life in a way that feels age-appropriate and accessible.

Camp Judea Supports Parents, Too
Sending a young child to sleepaway camp is a leap of faith, and that matters. A strong first camp experience depends on thoughtful camper placement, clear communication with families, an experienced staff trained to support young campers emotionally, and a camp culture that sees the whole child.
At Camp Judaea, this significant network of support is strengthened by our Kehilah Care Team, a group of trained professionals focused on camper well-being, emotional adjustment, and community care.
They work closely with counselors and leadership to help young campers navigate their emotions, transitions, and social dynamics, especially during those first few days away from home. When parents know there is a team purposefully focused on their child’ s emotional experience and not just their activity schedule, trust grows. And when parents are informed and supported, children feel it too.
A First Step, Not a Lifetime Commitment
Selecting a shorter sleepaway camp session is about offering a child the opportunity to explore new experiences in ways that feels manageable and meaningful. And sometimes, the bravest step isn’ t the biggest one; it’ s the rightsized one.
For many families, that first step makes all the difference. A shorter session does not limit the experience but rather, it builds the foundation for it. When children leave camp feeling capable, connected, and proud, they are far more likely to return ready for more.
Established in 1961, Camp Judaea is a Jewish, Israel-centered summer camp community for children ages 7-15 located in Hendersonville, NC.
