Q) In a hydropower project, what are the
roles of a Civil Engineer besides design and
construction? Is Nepal producing competent
Civil Engineers who can properly plan,
manage and execute large-scale projects?
A Civil Engineer can play a vital role in the
operation phase as well. The knowledge of
sediments in water and its effect on turbines
is crucial, and it is Civil Engineer who has this
knowledge. Therefore, the need of Civil
Engineer is also existent in the operation
phase as they guide at the inlet section for
controlling the amount of water entering into
the turbine.
While constructing large projects, there is
need of skilled and experienced manpower.
Since this manpower is still lacking in our
country, we must hire manpower from
abroad. The fresh engineers, who have
theoretical knowledge, do not have the
practical skills. They must be kept in the
shadow of the hired skilled manpower so
that they can learn more about the subject. I
hope that, in the upcoming days, Nepal will
be capable of producing Civil Engineers who
can handle large-scale projects.
“The development of our
hydropower is happening in
an unnoticeable way.”
“In the present scenario of
Nepal, the scope of
hydropower engineers is
very high. If any alternative
energy is found more
effective compared to
hydropower, then
fluctuations might happen.”
