A Message from
Parks and Recreation
As we enjoy the longer days of summer, we want to encourage
you to get outdoors and celebrate all that is beautiful in the
City of Laguna Niguel. One of the best ways to get healthy and
meet people in your community is to visit one of our amazing
City parks. Get out in the fresh air, enjoy a walk or picnic, take
the children to the playground or just find some shade and
read. Not only do we have 34 amazing parks, we also enjoy
80 miles of hiking and biking trails, over 5,000 acres of open
space, and 141 miles of scenic, well-manicured streets – but this
isn’t all our remarkable City has to celebrate!
The start of 2019 marked a significant milestone for Laguna
Niguel as we celebrate our City’s 30th Anniversary on
December 1 later this year. From concerts and recreation
programs, to contests and classes, we hope you will gather
your friends, neighbors, and families to join the fun! Mark
your calendars for the 30th Anniversary Carnival on August
16, 17, and 18. The event will take place on El Lazo near the
Chet Holifield Federal Building (Ziggurat Building) and will
feature games, rides, live music, community booths, and
more! The Mayor, City Council, and staff are working closely
with community leaders to ensure that the 30th Anniversary
celebration is Laguna Niguel’s best anniversary celebration
to date.
Along with the exciting 30th Anniversary Summer Carnival, the
annual Summer Concert Series will kick off on Friday, June 21.
Due to construction, concerts will be held on the lower soccer
field at Crown Valley Park. Turn to page 7 for more information.
Also this summer, join us for our popular day camps at Crown
Valley Park. Squirrels Camp is designed for participants grades
1-3, and Coyotes Camp is for participants grades 4-8. This is a
great opportunity for children to gain friendships, participate
in activities, and go on exciting adventures! Both camps will
experience weekly excursions this year! Turn to page 9 for
more information.
Construction of the new Crown Valley Community Center is
well underway and we are expecting to open our new doors
in Spring of 2020. Staff have been eagerly planning and
preparing for new programs, classes, and events for our
wonderful community to enjoy.
We thank all of you for your continued support of our programs
and look forward to seeing you at our events this summer! Please
follow us on Facebook and Instagram @CityofLagunaNiguel
for new updates and information.

Instructor Showcase
Ron Gorman
Guitar and Ukulele Instructor
Ron has always been infected with the desire of
playing music. He started playing guitar in the sixth
grade and then learned to play the trombone in the
Portola Junior High School band. Throughout the
80’s, Ron immersed himself in the exploding local music scene, playing
in numerous bands, recording sessions, and music videos. Ron’s
songwriting creativity erupted during this period, where he composed
and recorded dozens of compositions.
Ron left his day job in agricultural research 16 years ago to pursue
the instruction of the guitar and ukulele for the City of Laguna Niguel
and other Orange County cities and community colleges. Currently,
the Orange County native plays in a band that performs at a variety
of events for local organizations, including a charity for war veterans,
Alzheimer’s Orange County, St. Joseph’s Hospital Cancer Survivors,
Torrance Relay for Life, and Brighter Smiles mobile dental units.
When Ron isn’t teaching, he enjoys spending time with his daughter
and grandson, performing in ‘pick-up’ bands throughout Southern
California, and writing music.
Vivian Stapleton
Tunes and Tales Instructor
Teaching children’s classes has been one of Vivian’s
greatest joys for more than two decades. She quit her
corporate job of 11 years shortly after her second child
was born, and has been teaching Tunes and Tales classes throughout
South Orange County ever since.
“When you are able to capture the interest of a child who may not have
ever attended a class before, and see it grow throughout the weeks,
it is so rewarding. And the children are being taught so many things,
without even realizing it. We learn to follow directions, share, take
turns, the importance of teamwork, and so much more. It is amazing to
watch a child’s confidence grow over the course of a session.”
Vivian, who has a B.A. in Sociology from UCI, has never regretted
leaving the corporate world. She has served on the Parks and
Recreation Commission for the City of Laguna Hills and has volunteered
for Laura’s House and Orangewood Children’s Home. With two grown
children now living on their own, working with children every day brings
great joy to her daily life. She loves to be able to allow time for moms
and caretakers to laugh a little, sing a little, and just have a good time!
