Pet Waste and Rain Water;
A Messy Story
Whether walking your dog on the beach or keeping
your pet in your backyard, pet owners always need to
be conscious of things they can do to prevent pet care
activities from creating discharges that may enter the
storm drains. Once urban or storm runoff containing pet
waste flows to the storm drain, it flows untreated to our
creeks, wetlands, rivers, and ultimately to the ocean. Pet
waste left in the environment introduces solids, bacteria,
and nutrients to the storm drain during periods of runoff.
When pet waste is washed into waterbodies, it decays,
using up oxygen and sometimes releasing ammonia.
Low oxygen levels and ammonia combined with warm
temperatures kill fish. Pet wastes also contain nutrients
that encourage weed and algae growth. Overly fertile
water becomes cloudy and green, hence unattractive
for swimming, boating, and fishing. Most importantly, pet
waste can carry bacteria and diseases, which could make
water unsafe for human contact. High bacteria levels are
one of the leading causes of beach closures.
Citizen of the Year Award Nominations
Cleaning up after your pet is as easy as 1-2-3.
1) Bring a bag, or use one from our many pet waste stations
throughout the City.
2) Clean it up.
3) Dispose of it in the trash.
Pet waste left on the ground could be carried into the
storm drain by runoff from rain, or from urban runoff, such
as from over-irrigation. Dispose your pet waste by putting
it in a bag before throwing it in the trash. Never place pet
waste in a recycling bin or in a composite pile. Remember,
storm drains do not go to the sewer; they flow directly into
channels and creeks to the ocean.
