My Time at Fusion Fest

By Ana Tew
Fusion Fest in Orlando was started in 2016 . Forty people from various heritages got together and brainstormed how to best share each person ’ s heritage and culture . After much discussion , Fusion Fest was born ! Their mission is to celebrate the people and the many cultures that make Central Florida awesome .
I was able to take part in their annual event in November 2020 . I walked in the flag parade , and was not only able to represent Girl Scouts , but my heritage as well . Each flag represented a different country and being that my mom and I are of Hispanic descent , it was so nice to see our culture represented , along with many other cultures .
Not only were you able to see the different representations , but you also had the chance to taste it too ! There were different food stands set up in the Dr . Phillips Center for the Performing Arts front lawn . You would buy tokens that could be used to go to the food stands and try items from different cultures .
There were also many different and unique vendors set up on the lawn . I saw a Henna Tattoo stand and a vendor who made facial coverings with imported Japanese fabrics .
There were several performances that happened on the outdoor stage . There was everything from an Irish Step Dancing group to a Peruvian Dance performance . I also got an up-close look at some of the native outfits people were wearing and they were so amazing ! They were very detailed and alltogether beautiful .
Fusion Fest inspires people to be proud of their heritage and truly represents so many cultures . It was an amazing experience , and I would encourage everyone to take part in this event . It was so much fun !
