Citrus College Near Space Balloon Project 2013-2014 Volume 1 | Page 5
III. Abstract
The purpose of this project is to explore whether or not sound is emitted by the aurora borealis, and/or produced by a vessel traveling MAC 1. The aurora borealis is a naturally occurring light phenomenon that takes places in the upper part of the northern hemisphere. The first phase of this experiment involves launching a balloon into the atmosphere when the lights are expected to reach their highest level of activity. The payload of the balloon will include sound recording and tracking devices. There will also be sound recording devices on the ground to ensure redundancies. Next, the sound recordings will be analyzed with the help of specialized software to expedite the process of sifting through hours of recordings. The intent of this project is to gather data to solidify a correlation between the aurora borealis and the reported claps and snaps heard during its activity.
