Citrus College Near Space Balloon Project 2013-2014 Volume 1 | Page 3

I. Introduction The Citrus College Cosmic Research Team, otherwise known as the Space Owls, consists of a group of eight students from Citrus College pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Two of the team members are from the Citrus College Recording Technology department, working alongside the Space Owls to strengthen the team’s understanding of the multiple disciplines woven into the different projects they are pursuing. This project has been approved by Dr. Eric Rabitoy, the dean of the Physical and Natural Sciences Department at Citrus College, as well as Robert Slack, the dean of Fine and Performing Arts, for its interdisciplinary goals. All members have a common goal of expanding their knowledge in high-altitude ballooning with an emphasis on analyzing sound frequencies in respect to higher altitude. This year, the team would like to travel to Fairbanks, Alaska in order to carry out one of their largest experiments. This involves the team sending a weather balloon into the atmosphere, along with a recording device, with the intent of recording any sound emitted from the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights. This entire experience, aside from allowing Citrus students to obtain a wealth of knowledge about the aurora borealis in respect to sound, would give the team the chance to network with other community college students in the Fairbanks area, as well as bring prestige to the Citrus College community. The Citrus College Cosmic Research Team values the importance of learning beyond the traditional classroom setting, which includes not only learning about new academic concepts, but also life skills that may be utilized through adulthood. The Cosmic Research Team and its advisor highly appreciate your support in their endeavors.   -?  3-?
