In the development of liberal democracies, the emphasis is put in the individual liberties following the rule of the law in everyday life so a society can prosper.
Liberal governments today seem to have forgotten the principles of liberalism and promulgate a relative freedom. They give us the opportunity to civic participation but don’t encourage citizens to actually take part in politics. They hide behind the screen of democracy but are closer to an oligarchy, the rule over us instead of with us.
By proposing a system in which the only civic participation opportunity happens when we vote for our representatives every two years, most governments manage to hold the power of the people and forget who they are supposed to protect.
