The Ugly Truths
Martínez, Ma. del Carmen
Prologue
When I was asked what my contribution to the school Project would be I had nothing in mind. Keeping up with my own work was difficult enough and working on a project that would force me to come up with a piece of work on demand was the last thing I needed.
However, when I went home and thought about it I realized that I would only have to ask my students to sit down and write their own opinion on issues we had been discussing all along. So I got them to go ahead and do it.
I had not been altogether wrong; we had to sort out the difficulties of a new challenge: emotional involvement in very sensitive issues. My students were expressing their feelings about sensitive and controversial topics in English; which, regardless of the number of years they have been learning it, is still a foreign language.
