Plaza Mafalda
Plaza Mafalda is a park which was inaugurated August 24th, 2004, in honor of a cartoon character created by Argeninean draughtsman Joaquín Salvador Lavado, "Quino".
In the 40’s, this park was property of Mitre railroad, but when the trains became property of the State the park became a “villa de emergencia”. After that, when the Military took power, they evicted the people who lived there. The official project for that vacant lot was to build monoblocks for the people who lived in the villas in Retiro. But the neighbourhood wasn’t happy about that. Thousands of residents decided to make a symbolic hug around the park, on February 9th, 1979. Sixteen years had to pass until this square stopped being a vacant lot and became what it is today.
