stopped being together, our convictions and thoughts were too different.

This was 34 years ago, and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Everyone at school was scared of the supposed “black riot”, as if the black people had decided to attack us, but I knew they were not.

Since that day, I have decided to dedicate my life to fight for justice. I could not stand doing nothing when people were being discriminated. Not only black people, also the Chinese, the Jews, gays and people with mental illnesses. The idea of someone being treated in a demeaning way made me mad. But it was not easy to confront a whole society that was used to that life style.

I have been in a lot of prisons, perhaps, this is funny or maybe tragic. For me everything I did has been worth the effort. All the police confrontation, the screams, the protests… Black freedom means a lot to me. Their fight was my fight too.

I remember a protest where I was in the front line, a friend of mine was standing by me, she was really decided to help and looked very angry and serious. When we arrived at the government offices, the police were obviously
