CANBERRA

The nation’s storyteller
Lonely Planet named Canberra as one of their top three cities to visit in the world this year,
a fact which came as no surprise to those that live there.
Former ABC Canberra radio presenter
Genevieve Jacobs was for the best part
of a decade the voice of Canberra, so it
made perfect sense for her to speak to
the event organisers that attended this
year’s Canberra showcase Top Secret.
Speaking at the gala dinner held in
one of the city’s most iconic locations,
the Australian War Memorial, Jacobs
touched on the fact that the city has
now shed its secrecy and is embracing
its new confidence in its own identity.
“From the moment that news was
announced from about 5:30am the
phones started ringing from other radio
stations round the country wanting us
to tell how this happened,” she said.
“Lonely Planet are looking for places
that are energized, evolving, growing
in a way that is intriguing and the story
isn’t always obvious before you arrive.
Places where you can make discoveries
which is in fact what often happens
when people arrive here in Canberra.”

While Canberra oft played second
fiddle to Sydney and Melbourne in the
past, new visitors from overseas see
the nation’s capital in a different light.
“When people from crowded places,
especially in Asia, visit they see striking
natural beauty, fascinating modernist
urban design and a close connection to
regional food and production,” she said.
“In the last decade Canberra has come
into its own. We have shrugged off
the notion of playing second fiddle
