ery mandolin, made for an electrifying night and set
the tone for a second blazing SCI set.
Throughout the long weekend there were many
other guest appearances in different sets that
helped reinforce that the Vibe Tribe is one, big family. Kung Fu invited both the Funky Dawgz Brass
Band and drum legend Bernard Purdie on stage
for “Saturday in the Park”. Tedeschi Trucks Band
had Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings on board for
a couple of Sly and the Family Stone covers. Melvin
Seals sat in on keys with Dark Star Orchestra for
an unforgettable performance.
Billy and the Kids, fronted by Bill Kreutzmann of
the Grateful Dead, put on a set completely unique
to any of the Dead 50 shows, by not repeating a single song from the five shows the Dead had in Santa
Clara and Chicago.
The entire weekend was highlighted by guest ap-
pearances, superb covers, and little unexpected surprises, like Electron putting together a complete set
of Pink Floyd songs spanning the band’s illustrious
career.
Other memorable acts of the weekend that just
cannot be ignored were Hayley Jane and the Primates, Gregg Allman, Wilco, Turkuaz, Preservation
Hall Jazz Band, Zappa Plays Zappa, Weezer, and
Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals.
While the festival still might not be able to drink
legally yet—next year is the big 21—the memories
held onto by the Vibe Tribe family could get you
drunk with happiness for years to come. And if
everything goes according to plan, we will be able
to enjoy the next 20 years of the Gathering of the
Vibes, lapping up the sunshine, great music, and
beautiful friendships at Seaside Park. ■
