I am lucky enough to grace the pages of Cider Mag each month with my opinions about local food, drinks, entertainment, and venues. Coincidentally, I get to tell the tales of the people who make these places worthy of the Newton Seal of Approval. It is a facet of the West River Community Project, founded with a need to protect their local post office that has branched out to serve many other needs in the neighborhood. Not only do they house the Post Office, but run the
West Townshend Country Store and Thrift Store out of the location. Along with services such as a lending library shelf, community art gallery, free Wi-Fi, and compost garden. Classes are also offered such as yoga and t’ ai chi ch’ uan. It looks like I have my work cut out for me this issue because my destination is the product of an entire community.
It’ s a Friday evening in July where even with air conditioning on full blast I’ m
sticking to my car’ s interior as I pull up to the West Townshend Country Store on Route 30. Cars line the road side and pack the small adjacent parking lots making you wonder what has drawn these crowds out into the heat. On only Fridays from June 7 to October 11 the village hosts the West Townshend Farmers Market.
The back lawn’ s perimeter is packed with a variety of local vendors from glass blowers to honey purveyors, with your seasonal fruits and veggies in the mix. Vendors also offer an array of fresh eggs, bread, and cheese with an assortment of quintessential Vermontey products such as maple syrup, maple candies and carved bird houses.
