❚ tea time

After sitting dormant for more than a decade, Captain Kennedy House, the historic mansion perched on the bank of the Red River in St. Andrews, Manitoba re-opened its doors in May, rebranded The Heritage Tea Room( pictured above). The building’ s restoration marks the return of a dining room, furnished with all the romantic trappings of a country tea house. The reimagined destination is already attracting multi-generational families out for a drive, lunch groups and couples on dates seeking a taste of serenity with their clotted cream and jam covered scone. We love that pastry chef Savannah Uruski’ s daily baked treats fill the pastry case, conveniently positioned by the espresso bar for those waiting for a table. 204-669-3534, 417 River Rd. ciao! news new openings & food and retail news

The local company has opened a bright new retail space where customers can easily stock up on breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks for the week ahead. The appeal goes beyond convenience; consider it a little insurance against takeout temptation. 204-489- 3209, 542 Academy Rd.

❚ fired up

After 17 years as a downtown Winnipeg favourite, Hermanos is turning the page on its original home and heading west. The celebrated South American steakhouse is bringing new life to Brandon’ s historic Firehall, transforming the landmark into a culinary and entertainment destination, with a series of South American culinary events set to introduce Brandon to its Argentine-inspired steakhouse concept. While it’ s bittersweet to say goodbye to an Exchange District institution, Winnipeg diners have reason for optimism: whispers of a Concert Hall revival are already beginning to circulate.
