WHERE TO STAY
Gimli
RETRO COOL For those tempted to linger another
day, the recently remodelled Rosé Beach House sits just steps from the sand at Winnipeg Beach. Instantly recognizable by its rose-pink doors, the retro motel leans fully into playful 1960s charm with sherbet-coloured interiors and cheeky design touches throughout. It is the kind of nostalgic that makes you want to dig out cat-eye sunglasses, order takeout ice cream and pretend you are starring in a 1960s beach postcard. Each room includes a kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave, Keurig

coffee maker and complimentary Wi-Fi for late-night movies after a long day in the sun. It trades old motel clichés for a polished retro glow, delivering the kind of vintage beach-town charm that practically calls for a second day at the lake.
WHAT TO DO
LAIDBACK LAKESIDE Continue ten minutes north
along Highway 9 to Gimli, where Manitoba’ s Icelandic heritage gives this lakeside town its distinctly lively character.
The settlement story dates to 1875 and comes with the opportunity to dress in traditional Viking regalia at Gimli’ s Heritage Museum. Horned helmets and fur cloaks make history lessons considerably more entertaining. Afterwards, stroll the long pier at the town centre, admire the colourful breakwater murals, browse shops and galleries, then finish with freshly battered pickerel and chips. Summer in Manitoba rarely gets better than that.

WHERE TO SHOP
PRAIRIE FINDS Less than an hour southwest of Winnipeg, the neighbouring towns of Winkler and Morden make an easy escape for city folks craving a slice of country life. Or at least, something a little different. Winkler’ s growing commercial district now includes a variety of national chains, including Winners, but curious explorers will still uncover a few extraordinary local gems. Originally built as an outlet for Kroeker Farms’ seasonal potato harvest, The Potato Store has grown into a destination all its own. Bags of prominently displayed potatoes and premium onions still greet shoppers at the door, but the sprawling space now overflows
