Winyan , the aptly named exhibit celebrating femininity as a force of resistance and resilience , is the Dakota word for women . Richly coloured pieces laden with symbolism associated with women of Dakota , Anishinaabe and Métis descent represent the work displayed at the Winnipeg Art Gallery . Ever since childhood , Fontaine enjoyed the act of creation - from drawing , building sewing to collecting recyclables . The creative urge led to enrolling in strong in the U of M ’ s school of art in her twenties . Later she attained a MFA from the University of Regina . Being a founding member of the Urban Shaman Contemporary Art Gallery is one of her proudest achievements . As an Indigenous arts educator for two plus decades , she believes visual art acts as a catharsis nourishing emotional , physical , mental and spiritual growth . As a daughter of a survivor of residential schools , art helped her deal with the trauma she felt over the years .
