Outdoor , public art installations animate Winnipeg ’ s urban spaces
1 . Spanning what once was the Hudson ’ s Bay store at the corner of Portage and Memorial , Glenn Gear and Peatr Thomas ’ s murals repurpose the windows of this iconic space and reflect Winnipeg ’ s culture and hopes for the future .
2 . Bright yellow fibreglass sugar beets spring from the ground at Plaza Station . Designed as a place to contemplate the hardships faced by Japanese Canadians during WWII , テンサイ ( TENSAI ) by Cindy Mochizuki and Kelty Miyoshi McKinnon commemorates the “ Sugar Beet Projects ” of 1942-1949 .
3 . Inspired by the Métis Red River carts , the steel wheels of ( Un ) Still Life with Spoked Wheels by Warren Carther appear to spin beside the Bishop Grandin Overpass and Chancellor Station .
4 . Winnipeg Words is a celebration of contemporary , local poetry . The words of nine Winnipeg poets have been installed in public libraries and buses throughout the city , offering new perspectives and insight .
5 . A larger-than-life copper tea kettle looms over the BLUE bus transitway near Beaumont Station . Named after the Métis community that existed where it stands , Rooster Town Kettle by Ian August symbolizes Métis hospitality .
6 . The 400-foot Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Heritage Wall re-creates the western façade of Upper Fort Garry and pays homage to Métis settlement , the fur trade and the establishment of Winnipeg .
7 . Water falls , fog bounds and light emits from Bill Pechet ’ s 10-metre tall emptyful ( pictured ). This stainless steel beaker represents
Winnipeg ’ s vast spaces .
8 . Sentinel of Truth is Darren Stebeleski ’ s monument to libraries and censorship ’ s perils and makes visiting the Millennium Library Park a must .
