iving in a city

L rich in culture is one of the bragging rights Winnipeggers enjoy . Many of us have reveled in the return of concerts , festivals , markets and events representing the province ’ s artistry . Virtually all of these experiences incorporate culturally diverse food .

Our multiculturalism is a significant factor in the city ’ s vibrant food scene . Longtime Ciao ! readers know this city ’ s diversity is celebrated regularly on these pages . For example , the bestlist that appears in every issue is categorized by cuisine type . Our tendency to make dining decisions based on the nationality of the cuisine ( shall we eat Thai or Italian tonight ?) plays a big role in how we choose to eat out . The places included in the list have been visited firsthand and selected for their high-quality standards . They do not pay to be included .
Winnipeg ’ s food culture has been gaining momentum . A few decades ago , eateries serving up delicious global fare were largely servicing customers from within the same community they represented . Avid travelers seeking adventures in their local dining made up the difference . For the vast majority , foreign cuisines may have been sampled here and there but not routinely ,
The ease of global travel and waves of immigration have changed things . World travel naturally increases one ’ s comfort level in trying new experiences . In turn , food delicacies we try when relaxed and happy on holidays abroad become new favourite cravings . Just as a single vacation to Mexico or the Caribbean ignites enthusiasm for ceviche or jerk chicken , it piques an interest in what else the world is serving up .
Anthony Bourdain ’ s role in

publisher ’ s note

changing perceptions toward unknown world cuisines was powerful . Late chef author and CNN journalist Bourdain was , for many global citizens , the voice for cultural cuisine awareness that changed how people think about eating out . His insightful travel documentaries reveal the history of a country through its food and widen acceptance for restaurants serving home-style dishes .
Bourdain showed how eating food from around the world is a gratifying way to learn about people . This issue ’ s inthekitchen feature on page 13 offers a snapshot of Winnipeg ’ s dining scene inspired by Mexico , Italy , Thailand and Georgia . Top tables on page 22 spotlights dining spots serving top notch Japanese , Middle Eastern , Jamaican , Thai , and Greek fare .
Foodsources looks at two Manitoba companies mass-producing perogies using old school recipes . Perogy Planet and Perfect Pierogies products have earned a spot on the dinner tables of traditionalists , replacing homemade versions at gatherings with dumplings that meet the approval of discerning elders .
Ciao ! shops on page 28 aims to add variety to your snack game , whether you have a salty , spicy , or sweet tooth . We cracked open dozens of colourful packages lining specialty food store shelves and tasted fistfuls of nibbles . This type of research opens the door to discovering fabulous shops diplaying all sorts of fun flavours . Take your own Ciao ! inspired food tour and taste the world right here at home .
