pulled pork . The entrepreneurial idea came to Rob Naleway during a night on the job at his father ’ s catering company . Surrounded by chafing dishes towering with meat , Rob could only think one thing : pulled pork would taste great in a perogy . This unlikely combination sparked the inspiration for Perogy Planet , which officially opened its doors on Main Street in 2014 .
Both brands found a customer base quickly , and demand accelerated . Automated production is lightning speed compared to the traditional approach . Today , Perfect Pierogies pumps product out at a rate of 5,000 per hour , using over 2,000 pounds of flour daily and between 5,000 and 6,000 pounds of potatoes per week . This allows the company to stock grocery aisles of Canada ’ s biggest retail chains , like Safeway and Sobeys .
Perogy Planet has also embraced automation , converting a cookiemaking machine into a perfect perogy press . This allows the venture to whip up between 5,000 and 7,000 perogies a day at the Main Street facility and distribute them to its four other retail locations across Winnipeg , giving city-dwellers ready-to-go perogies on each side of town .

Rob Naleway and Lawrence Porhownik know Manitoba ’ s love for Ukrainian food got them started and in turn are committed to supporting Manitobans . Both source cheese from local producer Bothwell and sauerkraut from Elman ’ s Kosher Foods , partnerships born out of a commitment to using top-notch ingredients to craft the best perogy possible .
Dill is grown for Perfect Pierogies by rural farmers , along with onions and spinach used for fillings . COO Lyndsay Kapkey thinks that this farm-to-table mindset has been key to the company ’ s success . In fact , she says , it all starts with yellow potatoes sourced from Portage La Prairie . “ That ’ s what makes it a ‘ perfect pierogi .’” Lawrence knows the power of good ingredients . As one long-time customer and lifetime perogy maker confessed , “ if you didn ’ t tell me they were machine made , I would never have known .”
Perogy Planet , meanwhile , is taking creative liberties using local ingredients to offer atypical flavours . Baba might not have imagined a pizza perogy bursting with
