When it comes to theme magazines, the annual Chocolate Issue may be our favourite. This chocolate focused magazine celebrates local flavour by turning its attention to sweet spots that offer their rewards as cocoa creations. We went behind the scenes with owners of Kawaii Crepe, Phil Salazar and Candy Lam, in the heart of Osborne Village, who showed us how a street food concept from the other side of the globe was translated into a uniquely Winnipeg culinary experience that is the first of its kind in Canada. See the resulting ingenuity on the pages of in the kitchen.
Look to ciao! cooks for a spring presentation of the oh so popular macaron. Winnipeg bakers Phingky Fuentes of Pinky’ s Bakeshop and Betty Lai and Doug Krahn of Chocolate Zen Bakery sprung into action when we requested a floral inspired cookie. The results were as delicious as they were beautiful.
Our chocolate theme ends with a pièce de résistance on our back page from a very talented henna and body artist, Kim Brennan. Her artistry has been captured as our last course. What started out as a crazy idea from a brainstorming session turned into a new type of chocolate masterpiece. Brennan exemplifies the can-do spirit that creative people exude when they are passionate about what they do.
With so many chocolate treats tempting readers on these pages, it is fortunate that April marks Ciao! ChocolateFest presented by the Forks Market. Eateries of all types are calling on chocoholics to try their creations throughout the month. Featured desserts, cocktails and even appetizers are offered at

$ 8. A sample of the specials can be found on pages 20 and 21, and all the chocolate choices are on ciaowinnipeg. com. Ciao! hounds are encouraged to submit photos of their favourite dishes to be shared with Ciao! facebook and instagram followers. And because we want you to eat freely and enjoy, ciao! fashion provides a collection of athletic looks to increase the incentive to get to the gym and burn those sugar calories. You’ re welcome.
We are also launching our annual search for the best kitchen in the city with the Ciao! Kitchen Design Competition presented by Steinbach Credit Union. Each year the entries continue to dazzle. They also reveal the high standards of excellence in design and craftsmanship found in this city. If you have a kitchen that has been recently renovated and you are excited about showing it off to Ciao! readers, now is your chance. We have lined up chef Michael Robins of Sydney’ s at the Forks to host and cook a dinner party for six in your new cucina. We will also photograph the winning kitchen to be featured as the centrepiece of our October issue. So ask yourself, do you own Winnipeg’ s best kitchen? If so, visit ciaowinnipeg. com to enter. The deadline for entries is June 30th. If you love your recent renovation, this contest is for you – it could mean learning a few cooking tricks from one of the city’ s hottest chefs.
