I game on
Ditch the next living room board game night for Across the Board ' s new sumptuous setting on the corner of Main St and Bannatyne Ave. Having outgrown its small nook on Albert St, the popular game café now occupies a bright street level space awash in light wood, high ceilings and picture windows, with more space for fun and an expanded menu and kitchen. The game selection( pictured) has passed the 1000 benchmark, and the menu offers snacks, appies, and entrées from pizzas to noodle bowls for hungry players to eat between turns. 211 Bannatyne Ave, 204‐691‐3422— JK
I baking, remixed
Squid ink croissants, wine infused buns, and matcha brioche: the pastries at The
Thaw Bakery are not your grandma ' s baking. This new shop ' s pastry mash ups reflect the cultural make up of its South End neighbourhood and French-born head baker in equal parts. The minimalist space is lined with self-serve cases of fresh pastries, including a standout croissant stuffed with a sweet and floral blend of osmanthus flower and rhubarb. 1235 Pembina Hwy, 204‐615‐8429— JK
I specialty shop
Tastes of the Mediterranean are the specialty at Agora Fine Foods. Shelves stocked with local and imported delicacies to make culinary connoisseurs drool, so it ' s a good thing visitors can pop into gorgeous Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar for a bite. This sleek bistro housed inside the shop serves a mix of Spanish, Greek,
and Italian dishes in a stylish space. We love the saganaki, flamed tableside, chorizostuffed piquillo peppers, and grilled octopus. 1765 Kenaston Blvd, 204‐285‐4068— JK
I roman holiday
Over the past decade, a trip to Little Italy has become more of a world tour, with countless cuisine categories from Japanese to French to Filipino populating the Corydon strip. Aurora Pizzeria, however, shows la dolce vita lives on. Proudly flying green, white, and red on its façade, this new casual spot on the corner of Corydon and Lilac serves Italian eats from pasta and pizza to Nutella-loaded cappuccinos. Chef Carla D’ Amato and her two sons hail straight from Italia and are introducing Winnipeg to Rome-style pizzas( made with thick, crispy crusts and cut into squares), and pointy, meat-filled Sicilian arancini. 842 Corydon Ave, 204‐615‐9644— JK
I slice of nice
Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar
Pizza fans that have been flocking to South Osborne’ s Vera Pizza for more than two years will be delighted that owner Tarik Cabildo has opened a new sister shop a few minutes north. Tucked behind minimal signage on River Avenue, just east of Osborne St, Super Deluxe Pizzeria serves the same pared-down Neapolitan style pies in a simple 48 seat space. Crispy crusts with just a hint of chew are loaded with toppings both
