Inspiring Trip

by Forestal Lawton, Vice President

Not since the 1990 Baptist World

Congress held in Seoul where

thousands were baptized as part of

the Congress proceedings have I been

so inspired as with my attendance at

the Annual Gathering held in Izmir. Turkey is the site of so much of the early history of the Christian Church. It was an inspiration to be able to trace the footsteps of the Apostle Paul and other early Christians. So many of the historical sites have been well preserved. The commitment of the Turkey Baptist despite the threats of oppression was commendable. Their faith is reminiscent of the 2nd Century Bishop Polycarp who died a martyr due to his beliefs.

The meeting of the Men's Department more than met my expectations. Not anticipating many to be present, I was pleasantly surprised with the delegation of about fifteen from Africa as well as the support of the North American Baptist Fellowship President. We were able to make a financial contribution to the Baptist in Izmir that hopefully will enable evangelistic efforts. We are hopeful that the presence of so many from Africa and the upcoming meeting in Durban and election of Paul Msiza as president of the BWA will reap many benefits for the Men's Department. Another memory of this meeting is the continuing dialogue between Christians and other faiths that are being pursued in the various commissions. The meeting of the Christian/Muslim was very enlightening in view of what is currently happening in Israel. We continue to pray for peace as our various faiths must coexist.

After the meeting, I was able to participate in an extended tour of the Seven Churches of Revelations. This was also inspiring to see so many of these ancient sites that have been preserved and are being excavated. It brings to life the writings of the New Testament. Standing on the mountain top in Troas looking out over the Aegean Sea toward Europe (Macedonia), one could visualize the man in Paul's vision urging him to come over and help us. One could not help but stand in awe of the Library at Ephesus and the 25,000 seat amphitheater. Amazing that such magnificent structures could be built without the modern technology that now exists.

These are just a few of my recollections of the trip to Turkey."
