People talk about teachers and students and their plight during this reconstruction, but nobody ever thinks about the staff who keep this school afloat and make sure everything is running ship shape. They have had their rooms taken apart, been given extra work, and been helping with the renovation.
The support staff is there to support the students, teachers, and the school itself. For example, a teacher would be considered “staff” at a school and a paraeducator would be part of the support staff. Without these support people, a school cannot function as effectively. It is thanks to them that our school runs smoothly. Despite the remodel and all of the moving around, they still fulfill their duties as staff of Community High School.
It’s not easy serving hungry teenagers; but throw in building construction, and the challenge is even greater. The lunch lady at Community High School, Daisy Lyons, has been working during construction with no kitchen, yet she’s still able to feed a high school of hungry students.
“Making sure that I have enough product for the students is the only thing that’s been difficult,” said Lyons. She moves between Community High School and Valley Middle School every day to make and bring meals to the students.
Extra effort is a way of life for the support staff. Just ask library para-educator Sara Tezel. She has had to clear out her whole library, shelves and all, and transport all the fiction books to the gym. She has to package all of her books and supplies while still doing her duties as the librarian of Community High School.
“The hardest part has been getting books to and from other schools,” said Tezel regarding the difficulties of the remodel.
