THE WEEK OF THE EARLY MODERN
PERIOD
Spain
The students of the second course of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) discovered the Spain of
the Early Modern Period (15 and 18 centuries).
In their time travel, they investigated about various advances, inventions and discoveries that were
carried out at that time:
The pocketknife, the diving suit, the Spanish deck of cards, the cigarette, the galleon, the latest
versions of the Spanish guitar... They discovered an era full of advances that are far from the
technological advances of today, but that were also important and contributed to improve people’s
lives and the society of that period.
They also elaborated a timeline in order to show their findings:

It should be noted that the Early Modern Period is known as the Age of Discovery or the Age of
Exploration because, during those three centuries, European ships sailed the seas all over the world in
search of new partners and commercial routes with which to contribute to the incipient European
capitalism. In those explorations, they found new nations and
mapped territories they did not know. Some of the most famous
explorers of this era are Cristopher Colombus, Vasco de Gama,
Magallanes or Juan Sebastián Elcano.
As they could not otherwise do, they completed this small project
by presenting their findings about the discoveries of the Early
Modern Period through a series of team presentations,
demonstrating everything they learnt.
It was a really interesting and enriching activity, since they learnt
a lot and it helped them to be more autonomous when up
information and to strengthen team work.
