Title Tool for an Imaginary Cinema, 2015 Lightbox, plastic letters 60 x 250 x 12,5 cm Edition of 3 (CK 242) Title Tool for an Imaginary Cinema consists of a light box with a set of letters which can be placed in two rows in order to spell short phrases. The artist initially selected 366 film titles to display, one for each day of the year. The selection was dedicated to the influential American film critic Amos Vogel (1921–2012) but also presented a compendium of the artist’s individual cinematic reference points. In the context of specific exhibitions, the artist may provide an individualized selection. The owner of the work can independently choose film titles to announce. While its function as an analog lettering board for film titles refers to the lit displays outside of movie theatres, the title alludes to the power of movies to engage our imagination. Thus Title Tool for an Imaginary Cinema literally takes on properties of an imaginary cinema: invoking memories of past visits to movie theaters and to movies seen or imagined. 30
