The French are famous for their sense of style in fashion, food and interior decorating. French interior trends have set the tone for the rest of the world since the 18th century – the Chateau of Versailles, Josephine Bonaparte, Coco Chanel, Philippe Stark – the list of those who have influenced French style and had a far reaching effect is endless.
Defining just what makes French style so appealing isn’t easy. Rustic? Shabby chic? (French comedian Marcel Lucont says that to the French Shabby chic is about as appropriate as fun-run or soft Brexit!). Farmhouse, Provencal, Parisian… French styles abound. But for interiors, on the whole, (unless you’re really into the whole gilded chateau glamour look) there are a couple of things that are consistent – simplicity and subtlety – but with French flair.
It’s about balance – not being overly complicated. It’s about using the best materials, natural materials like linen and fine cottons. Sometimes a dash of drama. Sometimes a smidgeon of glamour. Old pieces of furniture and textiles are recycled and adapted.
