And what does the discovery of buried roosters in the forest mean to a young boy? Will Sergeant William Jarrett uncover what is really going on or will it all remain hidden? We ' re excited to share this one with you. We hope you enjoy this Q & A with Bryan below.
Congratulations on being the Fiction Book of the Month! Can you tell our readers a bit about your book?
The Hidden, like my previous book The Drowning, is set on the north coast of NSW. A smallish town where everyone knows everything about everyone... except they don’ t. There’ s always secrets. Secrets that begin to fracture and reveal themselves as the story unfolds. Some criminal and some, shall we say,‘ sins’. Ambition drives us all in very different directions. And as the dark emerges so does the light. The beauty of the beach and the serenity of the forest can blind us. Goodies and baddies.
Your writing is unflinching, thrilling, and gritty. What draws you to these kinds of stories?
A decent amount of my time over the last 40 years has been spent around coastal towns. And that has given me an introduction to many a colourful character. Be it man or woman. I’ m intrigued by the stories we carry. Everyone has a story. You can’ t live a life and not have a story. Some of those stories feature criminality. Those I like to write about.
Has your experience as an actor influenced the way you develop your characters?
As an actor I have to understand the character I play. Character is everything. If the character is real, I can play it. Of course it needs hopefully to sit in a good story. With The Hidden I get the chance to explore, develop and, I hope, deliver memorable characters.
What can readers expect from you next? What’ s next? I’ m fiddling. Might be a story there somewhere.
