BROWN STUDENTS , CHAPLAIN LEARN ABOUT BOSTON ’ S HOMELESS POPULATION By Eileen Scott , Senior Writerer

T his fall , a handful of students from Brown University took a tour of Boston that had nothing to do with the city ’ s landmarks or the nation ’ s history . Instead , a guide named Matthew showed them the city ’ s often forgotten people — the homeless , the poor , and those needing refuge .

Matthew has been homeless for 20 years now . After surviving approximately 10 years on the streets of Boston , he became so good at speaking about homelessness that he started getting invitations from churches , colleges , and conferences . As a result of his annual cross-country tour and travelling art show , he hasn ’ t had to sleep outside or in a homeless shelter for over 10 years . He makes his way back to Boston for the summer months and house sits for vacationing ministers and pastors who have become friends . He calls his tour , “ Nowhere to Lay His Head - Homelessness and the Gospel : A Prayer Walk in Solidarity with the Homeless-Poor ” ( www . openchurches . org ).
On the tour , Matthew shows students from some of the top schools in the nation and others what a prosperous city , such as Boston , looks like through the eyes of someone who is homeless .
The small group from Brown ’ s Catholic Community included three students and Fr . Albert Duggan ’ 03 , the Catholic Chaplain at the university . They met Matthew at the Park Street T Station on Boston Common and visited various “ landmarks ” between there and South Station , including a church that organizes a w i n t e r 2 0 1 7 : : c h r i s t i a n u n i o n . o r g
