MUSIC REVIEW L auren Daigle is a pretty new contender in the world of worship music. However, if her first full length album, How Can It Be, is anything to go by, she’s going to do just fine. Artist: LAUREN DAIGLE Album: HOW CAN IT BE Rating: Genre: Worship, Singer/Songwriter, Pop, CCM For Fans Of: Hillsong United, Adele, Tenth Avenue North Label: Centricity Music Reviewed by: Christian St John Release Date: April 14, 2015 48 > CHRISTIAN REVIEW MAGAZINE Featuring 12 tracks, How Can It Be includes some of the best worship I have heard in a while. Predominately singer / songwriter in style, Lauren is not afraid to mix it up with a little pop and CCM fusion here and there. Having listened to the album a few times now, I can honestly say that Lauren’s music definitely stands out from the crowd. How Can It Be is a beautifully produced album and the musicianship is excellent on each and every track. But it is Lauren’s voice that stands out on this release. Truly captivating, her voice is incredible, and right from the opening lines of “First”, the album’s opening track, I knew that this was going to be a knockout release. To be honest, How Can It Be is a pleasant change from the majority of worship out there. There are a few songs that wouldn’t be out of place on a Hillsong release, namely “Loyal” and “Here’s My Heart” - the latter reminded me of “Oceans” from Hillsong United’s Zion album. And there are a couple of tracks that sound like something Jonathan Thulin may have written - “Come Alive (Dry Bones)” springs instantly to mind. With all that said, this is in no way a copycat or rip off album, and there is still enough originality to separate it from the afore mentioned artists. Also worth noting is that Lauren’s lyrics are more thoughtful than the typical worship songs released these days. Instead they had more of an old hymn vibe about them. “Oh God of endless mercy, God of unrelenting love, Rescue every daughter, Bring us back the wayward son, By Your spirit breathe upon them, show that You alone can save.” - from “Come Alive (Dry Bones)” When I first saw the cover of How Can It Be I instantly thought that it was going to be a similar release to Britt Nicole. But as the old saying goes, don’t judge a book (or album) by it’s cover. Passionate and powerful, this is an extraordinary worship album that shouldn’t be overlooked, as it has the power to soften every listener's heart and lead them before the throne of grace. Note: How Can It Be features 4 tracks from Lauren’s How Can It Be EP that was released in 2014. The remaining 8 tracks are all new compositions.
