CROWDER American Prodigal
On his second album after abandoning the“ David Crowder Band” identity, Crowder shows again the thrilling eclecticism that’ s long been his trademark. Every song features its own sound palette. Sparse electric piano, banjo, and heavily distorted blues stompers coexist with guest turns from rappers Kevin“ KB” Burgess and Tedashii. Full gospel number“ All My Hope” gives way to the“ We Will Rock You” styleanthem“ Shouting Grounds.” Crowder’ s lyrics show how songs can explicitly discuss sin and redemption in Christ without becoming trite. An
album like this rewards complete listening, not just piecemeal singles. Anyone who equates worship with snoring, or rock music with vague spirituality, can find their refutation right here.
TANYA GODSEY Love Lines the Last Horizon
A warm alto somewhere between Amy Grant’ s rasp and Margaret Becker’ s belt, Godsey works with producer extraordinaire Ben Shive on her third album. The result is radio-ready, piano-driven light pop that avoids the temptation to go fullout Adele. She excels at percussive, midtempo ballads drawing from Scripture and classic
hymnody. Highlights: the Imogen Heap-style
vocal harmonizer on the eschatological“ All Things Right,” the Adele-like“ Beautiful War,” and the pursuing spirit animating“ Anywhere You Are.”
NEEDTOBREATHE Hard Love
Christian-oriented music from Owl City to Twenty One Pilots continues to make substantial impact in the
mainstream, and Bear and Bo Rinehart’ s sixth major label release joins the action. Coded Christian lingo like,“ Come to the fountain. Let me hear you testify,” abounds, serving up positive thoughts and love songs. Sonics range from gospel to stomping country to echoing Coldplay-style anthems, with Bear’ s quavering yet strong tenor holding it all together from one track to the next, recalling Chris Martin one moment and Sam Cooke the next.
SAM ASHWORTH Thieves
The Ashworth does not fall far from the tree. Not only do his soulful vocals eerily recall his father, artist / producer legend Charlie Peacock, but he also does himself credit as a songwriter and performer as well on this all-killer-no-filler five song EP of guitar-based pop. Eleven years have elapsed since his previous album; hopefully the next will arrive much sooner.
