I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of my former first grade students recently. I specifically chose him because of what I know and remember about him. I wanted to ask him, his keys to success, his testimony, why he stuck with it. You see, as a first grader at Jewel Christian Academy, Julian wanted to be a chef. Fast forward to 2014 at age 21, Julian Jamaal Jones is not only fulfilling his goals, he is in full pursuit of his dreams. How? Hard work and perseverance. Julian’s interest in the art of cooking began at the early age of 4 or 5, “I wanted to learn to cook”. Watching Emeril Lagasse and other chefs on The Food Network only increased his interest. He also helped his mom in the kitchen preparing simple meals like eggs and smoothies for family breakfasts. During his senior year, a visit from the Johnson & Wales University Admissions Department prompted Julian and his family to visit the campus in Charlotte, NC.
